The Association of Agricultural Research Institutions in the Near East and North Africa (AARINENA) participated in the closing workshop of the research-support activities under the “Catalyzing a Transformative Model for Circularity through 9R’s in Aqaba” project, held on 22 July 2026 in Aqaba, Jordan.
The project, led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Jordan, in coordination with the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), funded by the European Union, and implemented in partnership with the Jordan Society for Scientific Research, Entrepreneurship and Creativity (JSSREC), aims to advance the adoption of the 9R’s circular economy framework to enhance resource efficiency, reduce waste generation, and contribute to climate action and sustainable development in Aqaba.
The workshop brought together representatives from research and academic institutions, development organizations, public authorities, and other stakeholders to discuss how scientific research and innovation can be translated into practical circular economy solutions. Discussions emphasized strengthening collaboration among academia, the public and private sectors, and development partners to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable resource management.
The workshop also showcased research initiatives addressing industrial resource efficiency, circular use of marine sediments, and the application of artificial intelligence to encourage public engagement in sustainability.
AARINENA’s participation reflects its commitment to strengthening the role of agricultural research, innovation, and regional partnerships in advancing sustainable development and resource efficiency. Through its networks and partnerships, AARINENA continues to promote knowledge exchange and innovative approaches that contribute to more resilient and sustainable agrifood systems across the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region.
